The Welsh Dragon Coin

The dragon of Wales dominates the coin's design. The creature is fearsome, powerful and impressive. It holds a shield with 4 lions rampant armed, the banner of Owain Glyndwr who was a Welsh ruler and the last native Welshman to be Prince of Wales.

Around the outer part of the coin are the inscriptions RED DRAGON OF WALES and 2018.

The face of the coin is the Queen's effigy and current coin portrait.

The coin is available in £2, £5, £10, £100, £500 and £1,000 denominations.

Y Ddraig Goch - Wales' Mythical Beast

Dragons are one of the best known and loved mythical beasts. They have features in tales and folklore for generations and are associated with strength, wisdom and power.

The Red Dragon was an emblem of Owen Tudor, the grandfather of Henry VII, who founded the infamous Tudor dynasty. Henry VII's troops carried a fiery red dragon standard at the Battle of Bosworth. During the Tudor reigns, the red dragon was used as a supporter in the English Crowns's coat of arms, along with the English lion.

Today, the red dragon is a proud symbol of all things Welsh.

It's the third coin in the exciting and overwhelmingly popular Queen's Beast series, after the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland. The collection continues to celebrate the Queen's rich heritage in unprecedented royal times.

The coin's face and tail features designs by famed Royal Mint artist Jody Clark. Clark is a superb engraver whose work includes the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that features on British coins.

“Although the dragon isn’t a real creature, I could still take inspiration from real animals. I researched lizards, crocodiles and snakes and tried lots of different approaches until I got the look I wanted. I wanted the beasts in the collection to feel fantastical but also have realistic elements. I think the static shield at the centre of the coin gives a contrast to the beast, with the dragon’s tail and claws curling around the shield giving the design a sense of movement,” Jody Clark
