Prince Philip Retirement Coin

Celebrating a Life of Service

To celebrate HRH The Duke of Edinburgh's contribution to public life and mark his retirement, The Royal Mint has issued 2017 £5 coins.

This is the only official UK coin to celebrate The Duke's public service, and is available in gold Proof, silver Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated editions.

The obverse features a portrait of Prince Philip, which was originally designed by renowned coin and medallic designer Humphrey Paget. Around the portrait reads HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH • NON SIBI SED PATRIAE (not for self but for country). The reverse design, featuring HM The Queen, has been updated by Royal Mint coin designer Lee R. Jones and approved by The Duke of Edinburgh himself.

Duty, Leadership, Service

After nearly 80 years of dedicated service to the nation, Prince Philip stepped down from public life in 2017. The Royal Mint celebrates his extraordinary contribution to public life and people’s lives with a stunning five pound coin.

The Duke of Edinburgh has a special relationship with The Royal Mint. He served as President of The Royal Mint Advisory Committee from 1952 until 1999, an unbroken period of 47 years. Every coin and medal produced by The Royal Mint over this time, including four portraits of The Queen, has been discussed and approved by the committee he chaired.
