The 2018 silver Red Dragon of Wales coin is Royal Mint's third coin in the hugely popular Queen's Beast collection.
The silver coin features a dragon rearing up over a shield that bears 4 leopards. Around the edge of the face is the inscription RED DRAGON OF WALES 2018.
The reverse features the fifth portrait of The Queen to be used on coins. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by noted Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark.
The exquisite design is packaged in a charming display box and is accompanied by a booklet that was produced in collaboration with Clive Cheeseman, the Richmond Herald at the College of Arms.
The mint's Queen's Beast collection was launched in 2017 with the approval of the Palace. It began with the stunning Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland, and continues with the awe inspiring Red Dragon of Wales.
Wales has cherished the dragon as its national symbol for centuries. Historians estimate that its earliest usage may have been as far back as 829 AD.
The dragon is a symbol of strength, power and wisom, and was famously used by Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII. Henry himself adopted the symbol at the Battle of Bosworth Field, the last significant battle in the War of the Roses.
The Red Dragon of Wales is the third release in the collection. Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark has taken centuries of tradition and combined it with contemporary design to create a series of dynamic reverse designs. The Queen’s Beasts - The Red Dragon of Wales 2018 1oz Silver Proof £5 Coin add-to-cart st No No supplierCost tags
