Originally known as the British Empire Games, The Commonwealth Games (originally held in 1930) is a sporting event which occurs every four years.Largely comprised of former British colonies, the Games were first suggested in 1891 by John Astley Cooper as a means to increase good feeling and sportsmanship throughout the British Empire.
In 2018, the Games return to Australia, marking the fifth time the country has hosted the event. As part of Commonwealth tradition, many runners take part in the Queen's Baton Relay. Commencing at Buckingham Palace on March 13th 2017, a baton containing a message from the Queen is passed to the first runner. Over the course of 388 days, the baton will pass through every territory in the Commonwealth, before finally ending up at the Game's opening ceremony on 4th April 2018, where the message is read aloud.
To celebrate this tradition, the Royal Australian Mint have issued this $25 gold proof coin. The obverse features a runner holding the baton as they make their way along the Gold Coast, as the flags of the 70 participating countries fly proudly in the background.
