100th Anniversary of the First World War Aviation 2017
The Royal Mint issued the only official UK coin to honour the role of aviation and the pilots in the First World War in July 2017.
To mark the 100th anniversary of WWI aviation, the mint has released Brilliant Uncirculated, silver, silver Piedfort and gold £2 coins. These coins are perfect for Royal Mint coin collectors and World War One history buffs.
• Brilliant Uncirculated Struck in cupro-nickel (inner) and nickel-brass (outer)
• Silver This coin is struck in 925 Sterling silver to Proof quality, in a limited edition presentation of 3,500 coins
• Piedfort The double-thickness Piedfort coin is struck in .925 Sterling silver to Proof quality, in a limited edition presentation of 2,000 coins
• Gold This coin is struck in 22 karat gold to Proof quality, in a limited edition presentation of 450 coins
The design of the £2 Aviation coin was completed by design agency tangerine, whose senior designer's grandfather was one of the early flyers who carried out reconnaissance missions over the WWI trenches.
