Representation of the People Act 1918
This Royal Mint commemorative coin collection marks the centenary of an historic moment in British democracy: the 1918 Representation of the People Act.
The act was the start of female suffrage in Great Britain. It was passed by an overwhelming majority in the House of Commons (385 for to 55 against) and gave women of property over the age of 30 the right to vote – not all women, therefore, could vote – but it was a major start. It also gave all men over the age of 21 the right to vote.
The 50p coin series features an original design by Royal Mint graphic designer Stephen Taylor. Each is presented in Royal Mint packaging with an accompanying booklet that looks at the historic moment in British history, which was produced in collaboration with Vote 100. The coins are struck as:
• 50p Brilliant Uncirculated coin
• 50p silver Proof coin
• 50p silver Proof Piedfort coin
• 50p gold Proof coin
