Designed by Stephen Taylor, the obverse of each coin features a line of people queuing (that quintessential staple of British culture), waiting to cast their votes. A woman, a soldier, a working-class man and a suffragette represent different societal classes finally awarded a voice in the political arena after years of painful struggle.
The reverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Jody Clark.
The Representation of the People Act
The Act, passed in February 1918, granted property-owning women over the age of 30 and all men over the age of 21 the right to vote. Although much progress was still to be made, it marked a watershed moment in the enfranchisement of British citizens, and was a huge victory for freedom and democracy.
