The Royal MintThis coin is the Royal Mint's stirring silver piedfort Proof tribute to the pilots of the First World War

The design

Pilots were depended upon to create reliable maps of landscapes that seemed to be constantly changing. The design of this silver piedfort Proof Royal Mint coin draws its inspiration from blueprints and cartography.

The design shows a pilot and his observer flying a Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 plane over the battle of Arras as they perform a reconnaissance mission. Whilst the plane is rendered in realistic detail, the landscape below is a stylised, map-like style.

The writing around the coin's obverse reads "1914-1918 The War In The Air". Lettering around the edge remembers those who sacrificed their lives with the words, "The Sky Rained Heroes."

Fully endorsed by the Imperial War Museums, this is the only official UK coin to commemorate the heroics of World War One's brave aviators

Beginning life as the Royal Air Corps, the RAF was an integral part of British warefare. Battling enemy planes in the skies above the trenches, embarking upon vital reconnaissance missions, or delivering supplies -  their work was essential.

Braving altitude sickness, freezing temperatures, and enemy fire, their contributions were invaluable. This coin remembers their brave efforts.
