The Red Dragon of Wales
Wales has cherished the dragon as its national symbol for centuries. Historians estimate that its earliest usage may have been as far back as 829 AD. The dragon is a symbol of strength, power and wisdom, and was famously used by Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII, as an emblem. Henry himself adopted the symbol at the Battle of Bosworth Field, the last significant battle in the War of the Roses.
The Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark has taken centuries of tradition and combined it with contemporary design to create a series of dynamic reverse designs.
