The Royal Mint Platinum Wedding coins celebrate the longest Royal marriage in British history
To celebrate 70 years of marriage between the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, The Royal Mint has issued a series of beautiful coins in platinum, gold, silver and cupro-nickel.
The coins' lavish obverse features two elegant profile portraits of the Queen and Prince Philip. Designed by Etienne Millner, the beautiful detail depicts the Queen's dual role as both a monarch, and as a wife and mother. The couple look right across the coin to their future together.
John Bergdahl created two designs for the coins' reverse: the Equestrian and the Double Shield.
The Equestrian Design
Both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have a love of horses but it seems they rarely rode together, so Bergdahl depicts them at the Trooping the Colour. The Queen is riding her favourite horse Burmese and appears very serene, while Prince Philip’s horse is seen pulling to one side and about to kick over the traces, a reflection perhaps of their different natures.
The Double Shield Design
The design was inspired by the official programmes of events for state occasions at the time the royal couple were married. A formal armorial (a heraldic device) sits above the inscription 70 years of marriage. The double arms depicts the heraldic lineage of both families at the time of their union.
